Short Story Competition HQ

By
April 27th, 2013

short story competitionsShort Story Competition HQ is a new site that brings together a whole world of short story competitions into one comprehensive directory.

The site is running as a companion resource to my short story writing blog, The Write Turn.

It all started when I wanted to start proving information about short story competitions to The Write Turn readers. There are directories for everything else in the writing world, but when it came to lists of short story competitions, the few pages that existed were full of outdated info and broken links and were anything but comprehensive.  A quick bit of keyword research revealed it’s not like people aren’t looking for this info either. Ergo, SSCHQ.

It’s still early days, but we’ve already had a promising amount of interest from writers looking for places to show the world their talent, and maybe pick up some cool prizes along the way.

So, if short stories are your thing and you’d like to have a crack at winning something for your writing, or just get some experience submitting to professional markets, then check out Short Story Competition HQ.

Resources for Freelance Writers

By
February 4th, 2013

I have just put together a list of resources for freelance writers.

I’ve been doing (and loving) this job for a while now and while I don’t know everything there is to know, far from it, I have picked up a few tricks and bits along the way that I hope I can now share with others looking to start down on the same road to building a freelance writing career.

The page brings together links for everything from How to Build A Website to Where to Find Freelance Writing Work. I list a selection of books I’ve found most inspirational, as well as a few links to different products that no freelance writer or blogger should be without, especially if you’re running your own pages.

The list does contain some affiliate links which means if you purchase anything here that I’ve given the thumbs up to, I get a few coins thrown my way. Rest assured I only promote the products I personally know, use and value.

I hope people can get some use out of this page in starting up their own freelance writing life. It’s a brilliant job!

Know of any great resources for freelance writers I’ve missed? Do let me know!

I’m rather excited to announce the founding of my new company, Kraken Copy. Actually, it kicked off at the end of last year to an astounding start and is now settling into a nice and smooth and steadily growing enterprise.

While I’ve been freelancing as a word slinger for some time now, Kraken Copy is a formalisation of those efforts combining everything I do, from blogging to ebook publication as well as other types of copy writing and editing services.

Head over to the website at www.krakencopy.com.au to see what’s happening and keep an eye on developments. The site still has a few little bits to smooth along, and on the day when I’m not flat out writing, it’ll happen!

Oh, and the awesome logo was designed by the ever talented Amanda over at Let’s Design It. Whatever you need in the way of graphic design, you need not look further.

projectCREATE

projectCREATE

I’m pretty happy to have signed on with the team at projectCREATE, a software and web development company.

Basically my job is blogging about all sorts of web and tech know how. Fortunately, it’s one of my all time favourite subjects and  I’ve spent more than enough time noodling around with my various sites to even know what I’m talking about! Most of the time….

For one it’s an awesome job because, well, I get paid to write and play with WordPress. But it’s also an awesome job because from personal experience, I know the kinds of posts I’m now writing are the kinds of posts that I’ve found so helpful and inspiring and have made such a huge impact on my life and what I do. If I can affect that same inspiration in other people, well that’s a perfect job.

And the people are pretty cool too.

All Quiet on the Eastern Front

By
November 22nd, 2012

My online world has been a little quiet these last few weeks, while my offline world has been a tumult of awesome and crazy. The reason? I’ve just relocated to Queensland, or back to Queensland I should say, after almost five years of living in middle-of-nowhere-small-town Western Australia. So I’ve gone from 2 bedroom townhouse on matchbox size yard, to five bedroom house on 5 acres. From full time writer to full time Trying to Organise a New Life-er and continue on writing. But we’re getting there. And then there was that long, dark period of not having any Internet. Not even an operational smart phone! The horror! Let’s not talk about it…. it’s all ok now.

So, as some order of normality is starting to shine through on this end, this period of radio silence (or considerably low volume at least) is over and we’re back to regular scheduling.

Check out my Otherworld Blog for rambletastic adventures of my new house and the rest of it.
